The player I am targeting in this game is Reds starting pitcher Andrew Abbott. Abbott is a lefty who debuted last season and showed strong promise with a 3.87 ERA in 21 starts. Abbott has continued that into this season, slightly improving his ERA to the tune of a 3.42 ERA over his first 14 starts this season. He has quickly cemented himself as an ace in the red rotation that can be heavily relied on.
The bet I’m going with Abbott tonight is for him to go over 5.5 strikeouts. last season, Abbott had 120 strikeouts in 109.1 innings. This season, his strikeout stuff has been way down, sporting just 60 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched this year so far. However, he has an excellent chance to get another high strike-out outing against this Red Sox team.
No one in the MLB has struck out against left-handed pitching more than the Red Sox this season. The Red Sox have struck out at a 28.1% rate against left-handed pitching, which is nearly 2% higher than the Mariners with the highest strikeout rate of 26.3%.
