Gray has dealt with some injuries this season which has had a huge impact on his effectiveness. He has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in five of his last six starts but he’s faced some very tough offenses and was on a pitch limitation after returning from a groin injury that put him on the injured list. Gray threw 72 pitches in his last start which means we can expect him to thrown around 85 pitches today.
The Angels have really struggled against right-pitchers as of late and have allowed 9 of the last 10 opposing right-handed starters to record 16+ outs. This lineup allowed Joey Estes to pitch a complete game shutout, only managed three hits against Casey Mize, and Hayden Wesneski was able to breeze through 6.1 innings in 86 pitches against them yesterday allowing just one hit. None of those pitchers are world beaters and really highlights how cold the Angels offense has been at the dish.
On the season, the Angels rank 25th in wRC+ (91), 22nd in batting average (.232), and 23rd in on-base percentage when facing right-handed pitching which sets up a very favorable matchup for Jon Gray. If he can keep his pitch count down he should be able to keep the damage to a minimum which will give him a good chance to pitch into the 6th inning.
