Padres vs. Astros Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest MLB Odds for Sunday Night Baseball

It's been a deflating start to the season for the Houston Astros.

It's not like the Astros have misplayed. But it can't help watching Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman flourishing with their new teams.

That said, the Astros are on a two-game winning streak and can get back over .500 with a win against the San Diego Padres on tonight's Sunday Night Baseball telecast on ESPN. Houston didn't have the best start to the season last year, but prevailed and ended up winning the AL West.

In a division of mediocrity, the Astros can easily do that again.

On the other hand, the Padres (15-6) are in the hardest division in baseball. San Diego is just .5 games ahead of the Dodgers, one game ahead of the Giants, and three games in front of the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Every game matters in this division.

The Padres haven't gotten great pitching out of their ace, Dylan Cease. They'll hope he can turn things around tonight against Houston lefty, Framber Valdez.

Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for tonight's Sunday Night Baseball matchup between the San Diego Padres vs. Houston Astros.

Padres vs. Astros Prediction

Dylan Cease will get the call for the Padres tonight. The right-hander has a 6.64 ERA on the year. However, his analytics aren't nearly as bad.

He's struck out nearly 27% of batters and walked just 6.7%. His ISO is .167, and his wOBA is .344, which isn't great but nothing extremely terrible.

Meanwhile, he'll battle an Astros lineup that has hit a .108 ISO and wOBA of .289 against righties this season. Only Isaac Paredes and Jeremy Pena have hit an ISO higher than .145 against righties in the Houston lineup.

Additionally, the Astros' projected lineup has struck out 23.2% of the time and has walked only 8.7% of the time. Cease should improve his ERA and earn a quality start against this Astros lineup tonight.

On the other hand, Framber Valdez will pitch for the Astros. Valdez has struck out righties nearly 28% of the time. He's also added 53.3% of grounders against righties and has limited righties to 13.3% of fly balls.

Valdez will likely face eight right-handed batters in the Padres' lineup. Those righties have combined to hit a .140 ISO and wOBA of .317 with 18.1% of strikeouts and 9.5% of walks. The Padres match up slightly better overall against Valdez, but Valdez should still be able to throw a quality start against this Padres club.

Therefore, I'll ride the Under 7.5 with two aces on the mound for tonight's Padres-Astros games.
