Angels vs. Athletics Prediction: Can Nick Kurtz, Surging A's Continue Run in AL West?

The Athletics opened this series with a statement, jumping all over the Angels for five runs in the first inning on their way to a 5-0 victory. More importantly, it continued a trend we’ve seen lately from this offense, as the A’s have now scored at least five runs in four of their last five games.

I like them to keep that momentum rolling on Friday.

Angles vs. Athletics Prediction

While Jeffrey Springs’ surface numbers won’t impress anyone, this handicap is more about the matchup than the pitching duel. The Athletics have been the better offensive team all season, scoring 345 runs while posting a .250 team batting average and a .329 on-base percentage. Nick Kurtz has emerged as one of the most dangerous bats in the lineup with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs, while Tyler Soderstrom continues to provide consistent power in the middle of the order.

The bigger concern is on the Angels side.

Los Angeles enters this game having scored just one total run over its last two contests and has now lost four of its last five games. The offense has been wildly inconsistent all season, and those struggles become even more pronounced away from home where the Angels are just 13-26 on the year.

Even if Jose Soriano turns in a respectable outing, the Angels still have to generate enough offense to keep pace, and that has been a major issue lately.

The Athletics have quietly dominated this matchup as well, winning four consecutive games against Los Angeles. They have also consistently played from ahead, leading after five innings in each of their last three games as home favorites.

What stands out most to me is the current form of these two clubs.

The Athletics have won three of their last five while continuing to swing the bats well. The Angels look completely lost offensively, and until they show signs of life at the plate, it’s difficult to trust them on the road against a lineup capable of putting up crooked numbers early.

We saw that exact script play out in Game 1.

Angels vs. Athletics Best Bet

Another fast start from the Athletics puts immediate pressure on an Angels offense that simply hasn’t shown the ability to respond. If Oakland jumps ahead again, this is the type of matchup that can snowball quickly.

The Athletics have the better offense, the better recent form, and all the momentum entering this game. I’m willing to lay the run line and look for another comfortable home victory.
