TBT Picks (7/27): Bucketneers vs Best Virginia, Red Scare vs The Money Team, Gutter Cat Gang vs Aftershocks

The West Virginia regional will punch its ticket to the next round this evening, as the top two seeds face off in a pivotal matchup in Charleston. Elsewhere, the Dayton regional will do the same, which in addition to a quarterfinal game, should make for a great night in The Basketball Tournament (TBT).

Winning two games thus far by an average of 20 points per game, the top-seeded Best Virginia has one final step before advancing to the quarterfinals this weekend; beating the Bucketneers. In their 10-point win vs. Herd That last night, Kevin Jones and John Flowers once again led the way, scoring a combined 34 points in the victory.

As for their opponents in this one, the Bucketneers also took care of business last night, albeit narrowly. In their 83-80 win, Jalen Riley led the way with 14 points, as they did all they could to stop big man Antonio Hester’s 17-2-10 performance. 

In this one, I expect the combo of Jones and Flowers to be too much, as Jermaine Haley puts the icing on the cake as Best Virginia advances.

Red Scare vs. The Money Team Start Time and Where To Watch

Red Scare vs. The Money Team Prediction

The Dayton Regional will also crown a winner tonight, as the top-seeded The Money Team (TMT) takes on No. 3 Red Scare. In one of the biggest round two wins, TMT ran Men of Mackey off the court, winning 92-75 behind another big performance from Jimmer Fredette. The difference in this one, however, was the help he received from Mitchell Creek, who added 26 points in the win. 

As for the Red Scare, two narrow wins to this point have them rightfully the underdog, as Jordan Sibert is the only real scoring threat for a deep that is one of the shallowest in TBT. 

In this game, I like for the combo of Fredette and Creek to be star TMT in the right direction, and big man Trevor Booker (who put up 21-3-11 last night) to be the difference late.

Red Scare vs. The Money Team Pick

Gutter Cat Gang vs. Aftershocks Start Time and Where To Watch

When - 9:00 p.m. EST

Gutter Cat Gang vs. Aftershocks Prediction

We’re onto the quarterfinals for this matchup, as the Gutter Cats and Aftershocks won their respective regions to set up this clash of titans. Winning each game of their regional by 10 points, the Gutter Cat Gang has gotten a heavy dose of Tyrese Rice, who added 22 points in their clinching performance over Team Arkansas back on July 19th. 

The Aftershocks needed heroics to get here, on the other hand, beating Bleed Green by one point (70-69) to advance. It’s also worth noting that was last night, giving the Gutter Cat Gang a full week of rest ahead of this one. 

Look for that to be the difference.
