Jalen Brunson was signed to a four-year, $104 million deal by the New York Knicks in the offseason and had a solid first game. He finished his regular season debut against the Memphis Grizzlies with 15 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds in a 115-112 overtime loss.
The most impressive part is that Brunson finished the game with 17 potential assists. That trailed only Tyrese Haliburton (21), Ja Morant (19), Trae Young (18) and tied Dejounte Murray (17) in the potential assist category, meaning there were still a good number of shots that weren’t directly converted to points.
Brunson is no longer playing in the shadow of Luka Doncic, who dominated the ball, and rightfully so. Brunson was paid the big bucks in the offseason for a reason, and now he’s the one with the ball in his hands most of the game. Brunson played the Grizzlies in the season opener, a team that is bottom 10 in assists to opposing PGs. The Pistons, on the other hand, allow far more assists to opposing point guards. Count me in!
