The Spurs head into Game 4 with all of the momentum after finally breaking through in Game 3, and I think the market is still undervaluing just how well San Antonio matches up with New York.
The biggest takeaway from Game 3 wasn’t simply that the Spurs won. It was how they won.

Spurs vs. Knicks Prediction Game 4
After struggling through the first two games, San Antonio made several critical adjustments that completely changed the complexion of the series. Most notably, they moved Victor Wembanyama away from Karl-Anthony Towns and allowed him to roam as a help defender near the basket. The result was a clogged paint, fewer easy looks for Jalen Brunson, and a much more comfortable defensive environment for the Spurs.
The numbers back it up.
San Antonio has dominated the opening stages of every game in this series. Through three games, the Spurs have posted first-quarter margins of +8, +9, and +11. Their defensive intensity and half-court execution have consistently put New York on its heels early.
Game 3 finally carried that success throughout all four quarters.
The Spurs also did a much better job offensively of attacking Towns in pick-and-roll situations rather than forcing difficult isolation possessions. That adjustment unlocked Wembanyama offensively and created cleaner looks for Stephon Castle and the supporting cast.
Just as importantly, San Antonio slowed the pace dramatically.
After allowing 31 transition possessions in Game 1 and 25 in Game 2, the Spurs held New York to just 14 transition opportunities in Game 3. That’s exactly the style of game they want to play. When the game becomes a half-court battle, San Antonio owns the best defense in the series.
New York certainly has counters available. Brunson is too good not to respond, and Mike Brown will undoubtedly make adjustments to get Towns more favorable matchups. But playoff basketball is often about which team can consistently impose its identity.
Right now, that team is San Antonio.
The Spurs have found a defensive blueprint that forces the Knicks into uncomfortable possessions while simultaneously creating easier opportunities for their own stars. With Wembanyama looking far more aggressive, Castle gaining confidence, and the role players feeding off the energy of a team that finally cracked the code, I expect San Antonio to keep this game close and potentially win it outright.
