There is a lot of hype surrounding this Michigan State Spartans team who returns four of five starters from last season. They got punched in the mouth in their season opener by JMU, losing outright as 16.5-point favorites on their home floor. Do you think Tom Izzo is going to let that happen again? Southern Indiana vs. Michigan State Prediction
Monday’s loss to the Dukes was an eye-opener for the Spartans. They now know that they can’t just show up and expect to win with their loaded veteran roster. I’m sure they’ve had a couple tough days of practice this week. The Spartans got embarrassed by a Sun Belt team already this week, Izzo is too good of a coach to let that happen again against an OVC team projected to finish in the basement of the conference.
Southern Indiana was decent last year in their first D1 season, getting a chance to play in the CBI tourney. Unfortunately for the Screaming Eagles, they’ve lost four double-digit scorers from last season. They hung around in their season opener against St. Louis, losing by only 12 and covering the spread on the road.
The only guy Michigan State has to worry about tonight is Jordan Tillmon, the speedy guard who transferred in from Florida A&M and dropped a team-high 15 points in their opener. Luckily for the Spartans, they’ve got their own speedster running the point who just so happens to be coming off a 35-point game. Tyson Walker is the best player on the court tonight; he is going to carry this offense to a 100-point performance after Monday’s embarrassing loss.
Considering Southern Indiana lost four double-digit scorers from last year, and they only had one player score 10+ points in their season opener, I don’t see the Screaming Eagles having a ton of success tonight against MSU coming off a loss. Buy low on the Spartans to win this game big, with Coach Izzo keeping his foot on the gas for the entire game. Expect more minutes for Xavier Booker, the 14th-ranked freshman in the country, against Southern Indiana in the second half. He only had two points in the opener, and will be eager to showcase his skills in the paint.
