Boise State vs. Virginia Tech Prediction
Both the Hokies and Broncos have improved their college basketball programs immensely over the last five or ten years. It hasn’t been the greatest start to the 2023 season for these two squads though, as they’ve both already added a loss to their resume.
Boise State got crushed by Clemson last week, and the Hokies fell to South Carolina earlier this year as six point favorites. Let’s dive into this matchup and see which team has the advantage tonight…
The Broncos lost Marcus Shaver this offseason, but they returned Max Rice (the coach’s son) and Tyson Degenhart, two of the best veterans in the Mountain West. This team is small, which is good for Hokies.
This is the deepest Virginia Tech roster we’ve seen in years. Even without Rodney Rice, this team can go eight or nine deep in the rotation if needed. Hunter Cattoor is one of the best perimeter defenders in the ACC. Expect him to strap up Max Rice tonight, eliminating the Broncos best shooter.
Virginia Tech isn’t a big team either, but they do have Lynn Kidd and Mylyjael Poteat in the paint. These two veterans match up well with Boise’s relatively small, offensive-minded frontcourt. Poteat is a defensive-minded big that’s going to give Tyson Degenhart and Cam Martin (Kansas transfer) trouble in the paint.
The biggest edge in this contest goes to Virginia Tech’s backcourt against Boise’s offensive-minded guards. This Boise team has struggled to defend the perimeter, and that’s exactly where the Hokies thrive. The Broncos gave up 37 combined points to Chase Hunter and Joe Girard on Clemson last week. Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor have no excuses tonight...
I don’t think the betting market knows how dangerous and complete this Virginia Tech team really is. They’ve already gotten their bad loss out of the way against South Carolina, and they’ve rebounded nicely in their last two contests. This Boise State team simply isn’t as dangerous without Marcus Shaver running the point. Back the Hokies to cover the spread tonight; it feels right backing the turkeys on Thanksgiving.
