San Diego State vs. Grand Canyon Prediction: Can Tyon Grant-Foster, Antelopes Upset Aztecs?

The Grand Canyon Antelopes will host the national championship runner-ups on Tuesday night when San Diego State comes to town. Can Tyon Grant-Foster continue to shine and lead the Lopes to an upset over the Aztecs? Krabs provides his prediction and pick for SDSU vs. GCU.

San Diego State vs. Grand Canyon Prediction: Can Tyon Grant-Foster, Antelopes Upset Aztecs?

After Grand Canyon’s epic comeback against UTA on Saturday, the Lopes have their highest NET ranking in program history. On Tuesday night, they welcome in the 25th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs for what should be the best mid-major game of the slate. Will the Lopes pull off a historic upset in Phoenix, or will Coach Dutcher and the Aztecs add another quality win to their resume?

San Diego State vs. Grand Canyon Prediction

This is the best Grand Canyon roster I’ve ever seen, and they’ve had some very competitive programs over the years. People forget this team went to the tournament last year, returning three double-digit scorers and a bunch of plug-and-play transfers.

This Grand Canyon team has one of the best defenses in the country. Typically it’s the Aztecs who have the best defense on the floor at all times, but tonight will feel a little different. Let’s not forget that GCU has one of the best student sections in all of college basketball. This will be one of the most electric environments of the college basketball season tonight.

DePaul transfer Tyon Grant-Foster is ninth in the nation in points per game and has one of the craziest stories in all of college basketball. He collapsed in the DePaul locker-room during the 2021 season, and at times thought he would never play basketball again. He has returned to the court in a big way this season, carrying the fourth collegiate team he’s played on.

This Grand Canyon team doesn’t just out-perform SDSU on defense. They are one of the best rebounding mid-majors in the country. The Lopes rank 16th in the country in team rebounding percentage, ahead of schools like Alabama, Gonzaga and Houston. Bryce Drew, the brother of Baylor coach Scott Drew, has this team playing their best basketball in his fourth year at GCU. I wouldn’t be surprised if Drew is one of the big-name hires at a power-five school this offseason.

I wouldn’t want to play the Lopes right now. The Aztecs have been carried by Jaedon LeDee all season, but GCU has the size and talent to limit his production tonight. Back Tyon Grant-Foster, one of college basketball’s best stories, and the Lopes to take care of business at home, and keep this game within a bucket. Home teams with a winning record against a ranked opponent has been an extremely profitable system in college basketball over the years…
