Butler vs. St. John's Prediction
Butler comes into tonight's conference matchup with a 10-3 record and a 1-1 record in the Big East beating Georgetown by 10, and losing to a good Providence team in overtime. Butler has some talented guards and they are deep. This Bulldogs team is led by Junior Pierre Brooks who is averaging 16.8 PPG. Not only do they have Brooks, but they have Jahmyl Telfort (14.8 PPG), DJ Davis (12.8 PPG), and Posh Alexander (10.7 PPG). Four players on this Butler team average over 10 points, and it is these four guards who account for a little more than 66% of this teams points. Out of these four guards, keep a lookout for Posh Alexander. Alexander played at St. John's the past 3 years before transferring to Butler. Expect to see Alexander take this game personal as he returns to Carnesecca Arena.
Speaking of Carnesecca Arena, St. John's defends their court well. They are 5-1 at home, with an overall record of 9-4. Just like Butler, St. John's is also 1-1 in Big East play, with their win coming against Xavier by 15, and their loss on December 23rd versus No. 4 UConn by four. This St. John's team runs the glass. They average 38.1 RPG (23rd in the nation) and 14.3 Offensive RPG (5th in the nation). Joel Soriano is going to be a presence in the paint tonight as Soriano averages 10.3 RPG. Expect to see a lot of second chance points for the Red Storm tonight as as well as Soriano. He matches up very well against this Butler team.
I think this will be a very good game tonight. I can see this being a back and forth game from start to finish. If the guards from Butler come out firing and shoot well from the charity stripe tonight, I think that they can keep this game close. As long as Soriano doesn't absolutely dominate the glass tonight, I think Butler can stay competitive with this St. John's team, as I believe that Butler is better on the offensive end and more efficient. I think that St. John's win this game by 3-5, but Butler covers.
