After winning the National Championship last season, the Huskies have gotten off to a solid start this year. Unfortunately, their star center Donovan Clingan is out for the next month or so. This is a huge loss for the Huskies, who now have to rely on sophomore Samson Johnson to defend the paint. This could cause serious problems for the Huskies against slashers like Posh Alexander and Jahmyl Telfort.
Butler is coming off consecutive road losses to Providence (OT) and St. John’s. They haven’t covered a spread since November. This is the perfect “buy-low” spot for a hungry Butler team looking to avenge some recent losses. They have the talent, guard-play and size to keep up with the Huskies, especially with Clingan out. If anything, the Bulldogs might own the size advantage now…
Posh Alexander is the X-Factor in this matchup tonight. He hasn’t made a three pointer since 11/30, but that’s not how he is going to find success against the Huskies. The driving specialist has a great matchup against a weaker interior defense without Clingan. I’m willing to bet Posh Alexander and Tristen Newton (who is coming off a 0 point performance) bounce back after some brutal road losses.
The Bulldogs might be coming off two straight losses, but they have been one of the best home teams in the country over the years. Butler is 8-0 at the Hinkle Fieldhouse this year. They have played much better at home this season; Butler will have all the confidence in the world that they can slay the defending National Champions.
Fade the Huskies without their star center tonight. UConn is unsurprisingly a public favorite, but the spread has moved from UConn -6 to -5 on most books. Back the short home underdog tonight; I’ll meet you at the cash counter.
