Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse Prediction: Can Sean Pedulla, Hokies Upset Orange In The Dome?

I wish I could stay away from betting on my alma mater tonight, but I simply can’t. Virginia Tech has been a major letdown this season, but they are only getting 1.5 points on the spread tonight on the road, where they've struggled mightily. Will the Hokies finally pull off a road upset, or will Syracuse win their third ACC game in a row?

Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse Prediction

I’m willing to bet we see the Hokies do something they’ve only done once this year: get a win on the road. Mike Young and the Hokies backs are against the wall, but luckily they have a solid matchup tonight. They’ve played Syracuse very well in the Mike Young era because of two reasons: they have the guards to eliminate Syracuse’s best players offensively, and the Hokies shoot the three-pointer extremely well.

Syracuse has also caught the fouling bug recently, averaging 17 fouls per game in their last three contests. That’s a huge problem against the Hokies, who are one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country. They do two things well offensively… make their free throws, and they shoot the three-pointer very well.

A lot of the Hokies have gone through shooting slumps this season, but there’s no doubt that Sean Pedulla, Hunter Cattoor and Tyler Nickel can shoot the three ball. Two of them shoot over 40% from deep, and Sean Pedulla broke out of his little slump last weekend with 26 points against Pittsburgh. I’m fully expecting Pedulla to be a centerpiece of the offense tonight once again, with MJ Collins struggling to show any consistency.

The Hokies shot 15% from three in their last game, but this team shoots better than 35% on the season from deep. I still think they’re underperforming from behind the arc, but with Pedulla’s confidence back, the Hokies will be doing most of their damage from deep on Tuesday night. Syracuse ranks 253rd in the country at defending the three pointer. They’ve given up threes like it’s their job over their last three games, with an opponent 3-PT% over 40%.

Virginia Tech is going to break out of their road slump with a big-time outright win tonight. They have a perfect matchup against a team they typically beat. Fade Syracuse at home, I’ll meet you at the cash counter.
