There aren’t many games slated for Selection Sunday, but one matchup stuck out to me. Duquesne will try to beat the VCU Rams for the second time this season as both teams look to win the A-10 Championship. Which surging squad will earn a spot in the NCAA tournament with a win on Sunday?

DUQUESNE VS. VCU PREDICTION
Both of these teams have been on fire down the stretch. Duquesne had to defeat Dayton to get here, and VCU had to beat three above-average teams in Fordham, UMass and St. Joes. It’s tough to tell who has the edge in this game, hence the short spread. I’ve got a feeling the Rams end up on top in this one.
VCU looked like one of the best teams in the A-10 halfway through the season. It looks like they have returned to mid-season form down the stretch. They’ve fought off some valiant efforts from some solid offenses, but this VCU perimeter defense has reigned supreme.
The Rams are also a significantly better free-throw shooting team. VCU ranks as the 15th best team at the line in the country. If this game comes down to last-minute free throws, VCU will have a significant advantage. Duquesne has some shooters, but they rank outside the top-175 in free throw percentage this season.
Dae Dae Grant and Jimmy Clark have done a great job getting the Dukes this far. They started the season losing their first five conference games, ripping off seven straight wins at the end of the season to get to this point. Unfortunately for the Dukes, the VCU Rams look like the team that won 15 out of 19 games in the middle of conference play.
VCU looks nearly unbeatable with how they are playing right now. Their elite defense has returned to form, holding their last three opponents to 61 PPG on average. Max Shulga and Joe Bamisile are too lengthy and physical for Duquesne to beat twice in a single season. Duquesne beat them earlier this year when they were playing without Max Shulga. That’s a huge boost having their leading scorer back for this Championship game.
With the Rams catching steam up from -1.5 to -2.5 on the spread, bet them before you get a worse number. They will defeat Duquesne, paving their way to another NCAA tournament appearance. The Rams play their best basketball in March; they will today.
