The UConn Huskies (24-7) take on the Villanova Wildcats 19-13) in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament tonight at Madison Square Garden. Villanova and Connecticut split the regular season series with a couple of exciting battles.
On January 8th, Nova defended home court 68-66, thanks to a couple of shocking late missed free throws from Alex Karaban. In the revenge game in Hartford, UConn rallied in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 23-6 over the last 10 minutes of action.
A few key notes from those matchups:
- Villanova led 32-25 and 34-26 respectively in the two matchups
- UConn did not have Liam McNeeley available in the loss
- Villanova committed just 15 combined turnovers across both games

Villanova vs. UConn Prediction
Expecting a tight one here at the Garden between these two slower-paced halfcourt teams that are quite familiar with each other.
On that note with the turnovers, UConn is 270th nationally in defensive turnover %. Villanova shouldn’t have a problem taking care of the basketball again tonight, and I think that bodes quite well for their ability to stay in this game.
Eric Dixon, the nation’s leading scorer, has been fantastic all year. He’s the engine for this Villanova offense, and I like their chances to generate good looks in the half-court. UConn’s Tarris Reed Jr. is too slow for him, and Samson Johnson is too thin. Last matchup, the Huskies switched a lot defensively, which gave Dixon some plus matchups and opened things up for other guys. Villanova is 2nd nationally shooting 40% from three-point land. Guys like Wooga Poplar and Jordan Longino will receive passes from Dixon and be put in advantageous positions to attack from. Poplar had 18 and 19 points in the two earlier matchups vs. UConn.
That all being said, it’s never comfy to take Kyle Neptune against Dan Hurley. I’d rather get in and get out on this bet, and take Villanova to cover the first half spread, as I would not be shocked for UConn to get hot after the break and open up a lead.
Based on Villanova’s first half success in the previous two matchups, the slow tempo, plus the fact that they’ve got the best player on the floor trying to salvage his final collegiate season with a Big East Tournament run, I love this play.
