The BYU Cougars will look to surprise the 3-seed Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night in the Round of 32. Matt MacKay thinks the Cougars have the chops to get it done and explains why in his second round bet for March Madness tonight.

BYU vs. Wisconsin Prediction, Pick, NCAA Tournament Odds for March Madness Round of 32

Two top-25 offenses go head-to-head in the Round of 32 on Saturday night when the 6-seed BYU Cougars take on the 3-seed Wisconsin Badgers. BYU is red-hot on offense right now, scoring 80 or more points in four of their previous five games played. Meanwhile, the Badgers coasted through their First Round matchup against Montana, shooting 55.4 percent from the field to beat the Big Sky champion 85-66. This will be the first meeting between BYU and Wisconsin since 2011. The Cougars went 14-6 in the Big 12, while Wisconsin finished 13-7 in Big Ten play. Each team suffered a loss during conference tournament play, with the Cougars running into Houston's buzzsaw defense, while Wisconsin's shooters went ice cold during a loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Final.

BYU vs. Wisconsin Prediction

John Tonje and John Blackwell are Wisconsin's backcourt duo that drive their offense, each averaging 15.6 or more points for the Badgers this season. Four starters average over five rebounds per game as well, including a pair of 7 foot forwards Steven Crowl and Nolan Winter.

Wisconsin ranks 104th in total rebound percentage, while BYU is an impressive 19th in this metric. The Cougars lack the same size on the interior but have C Keba Keita dominating the glass, averaging 8.0 rebounds per game. His strength makes up for the 6-7 height, contesting drives at the basket with consistency against most top teams in the Big 12.

On offense, BYU's three-point shooters match the volume of Wisconsin. The Cougars are 18th for 3-point attempt rate, compared to Wisconsin at 23rd in this metric. BYU has been much more effective in converting these shots from beyond the arc, ranked 37th in three-point percentage (37%) compared to the Badgers ranked 136th at 34.8%.

G Richie Saunders is the primary scorer for BYU, averaging 16 points per game, while freshman G Egor Demin averages 10.5 points and leads the Cougars with 5.3 assists per game. G Dallin Hall has begun to catch fire, particularly from three-point range, while Keita and F Fousseyni Traore each dominate the glass, combining for 13.4 rebounds per game.

Both of these defenses are ranked outside the top 100 in defensive rating, with the Badgers at 102.5 (105th) and Cougars at 102.8 (128th) in the nation. This game is going to come down to which team is better at converting from three-point range, which should provide a ton of entertainment value.

Oddsmakers opened with Wisconsin at -1.0, with a point total fluctuating between 154.5 and 155.5. BYU's only loss in its last 10 games came in a 74-54 loss to Houston in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Wisconsin is 6-4 SU in its last 10 games, losing to Oregon, Michigan State, Penn State, and Michigan.

In their last game played, BYU overpowered VCU's stout defense with 80 points, beating the Rams by nine points in the Round of 64. Wisconsin beat a good Montana State offense by 19 points, pulling away mid-way through the second half. Beating the Big Sky champion is much different than playing one of the hottest teams in the Power 4, which is exactly where BYU finds itself after a dominant February and March campaign.

I'm going to back BYU's red-hot shooting to pull off an upset over Wisconsin in the Round of 32 on Saturday night. Let's bet a unit on the Cougars' moneyline at -105 odds.
