Arizona took a very different roster-building approach this offseason — instead of flipping the lineup through the portal like most Top 25 teams, Tommy Lloyd brought back four players who averaged 7+ PPG last season, including:

• PG Jaden Bradley
• 7-foot big Motiejus Krivas
• G Pelle Larsson’s replacement committee
• Freshman 5⭐️ scorers Koa Peat & Brayden Burries

That matters, because early-season college hoops is rarely about ceiling. It’s about who is already functional.

Florida is the exact opposite. The Gators lost their entire starting backcourt (Clayton, Richard, Martin) to the NBA and are replacing them with Arkansas transfer Boogie Fland and Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee.

Both can score — but neither defends like the guards Florida relied on last year, and both will be learning Todd Golden’s defensive rotations on the fly.

Arizona has finished Top 50 in Adjusted Tempo in every Tommy Lloyd season.

Florida under Golden has also pushed pace (Top 70) — which means the Wildcats won’t be forced into a half-court game, which was the only real concern here.

Arizona returns continuity at PG and in the frontcourt. Florida replaces 75% of its guard usage with transfers + freshmen.

That matters against an Arizona team that won’t press you, but will punish you off mistakes in transition. Florida’s identity last year was winning the shot-volume battle. But that was because of guard rebounding and elite perimeter defense.

Now?

They have no Walter Clayton, Will Richard, or Alijah Martin. Transfer additions Fland and Lee are scorers, not defensive stoppers.

Arizona brings back size, length, and the most underrated big in this game: Krivas, who gives them the interior presence needed to handle Florida’s elite frontcourt.

Arizona might not only hold their own on the glass — they may win that battle outright.

Early-Season Market Inaccuracies

The number is assuming:

• Florida’s offense won’t take time to gel
• Their new backcourt will defend at last year’s level
• Arizona’s freshmen won’t score early
• Florida deserved to be lined as a 4+ point favorite

Every one of those is at best unproven, and at worst false. My line is a Pickem. Anything above +3 makes Arizona a buy.

Arizona's X-Factor

Everyone is talking about Peat, but Burries is the freshman most ready to be a Day 1 scoring option.

If Florida runs 3-big lineups and can’t guard the arc, Burries becomes the mismatch weapon.
