Texas is getting a lot of preseason hype because of the Sean Miller hire, the returning talent at guard, and the expectation that this program will bounce back — but tonight is not the spot to buy the Longhorns.
Duke is deeper, longer, much more complete on the defensive end, and they enter this season with both elite freshmen and veteran returners — something Texas doesn’t have yet.

Texas is replacing:
- Entire coaching staff
- Multiple starters
- Their defensive identity
Miller will eventually turn Texas into a tournament-caliber team, but Game 1 with a brand-new roster and rotational uncertainty is a bad spot — especially against a Duke team that lost nobody to the transfer portal and brought in the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.
Meanwhile, Jon Scheyer returns a core that already played deep into March plus adds Cam Boozer (ESPN No. 1 Recruit) and Cayden Boozer (ESPN No. 10).

Texas under Sean Miller needs to run — 20% of Miller’s offense typically comes in transition. Bad news: Duke ranked 8th nationally last year in transition suppression (just 8.2 fastbreak chances per game).
If Texas can’t get easy points, they’re forced into half-court shot creation — which is where Duke’s defensive length suffocates young teams.
In Duke’s recent scrimmage vs Tennessee, Boozer & Evans drew 19 free throws by attacking the rim. Meanwhile, Texas brings in transfer guards who are scorers but not elite defenders — and the refs always whistle heavy in early non-conference games.
If Duke is +8 or better in free throw attempts, this number covers easily.
