Auburn heads into this matchup as an underdog, and after getting blasted by Michigan in Las Vegas, the market is overreacting. This is the exact kind of spot I want to buy Auburn — a talented team coming off its worst showing of the season, catching a number that’s simply too big on a neutral floor.
Let’s start with the obvious: Auburn is nowhere near as bad as they looked against Michigan. That was a perfect storm — legs gone on the second night of a back-to-back, foul trouble early, and Michigan hitting everything it threw up. Before that game, Auburn had won four straight by double digits and looked like one of the most balanced teams in the SEC.

St. John's vs. Auburn Prediction
Offensively, Auburn still checks every box. They’re averaging 89 points per game, shooting 47% from the field, and an elite 40.9% from three. Even more important in a tight spread? They shoot 92.7% from the free-throw line — No. 1 in the entire country. When you’re grabbing the points, elite FT shooting becomes your best friend late.
Keyshawn Hall — who was averaging 21 points before his off night vs. Michigan — is still a matchup nightmare at his size. Tahaad Pettiford is emerging as a legitimate secondary scorer, and KeShawn Murphy adds another reliable option who can stretch the floor and defend. Auburn has multiple guys capable of giving you 20 on any night.
Yes, St. John’s comes in red-hot after dropping 96 on Baylor, but context matters. Baylor’s defense was horrible that night, and the Red Storm had their absolute best shooting performance of the season. Asking them to repeat that — especially away from Carnesecca Arena — is a big stretch.
Defensively, neither team is elite, but Auburn’s athleticism and size match up far better with St. John’s than Baylor did. And while the Red Storm can light it up offensively (95.3 PPG), they still allow 75 points per game and play at a pace that naturally keeps underdogs within the number.
This spread also ignores Auburn’s historical profile:
- Auburn is 21–3 vs. non-conference opponents in their last 24.
- They’re 5–2 ATS this season and undefeated at home and in neutral-court bounce-back spots.
- St. John’s has lost six straight to SEC teams.
The Tigers are not scared of big brands and not scared of rhythm offenses. Steven Pearl will have this team locked in after that embarrassment, and historically, Auburn plays its best basketball right after its worst.
St. John’s wants to turn this into a track meet. Auburn can run with them. But Auburn has more size, more rebounding, better interior presence, and the more complete roster. And if this game becomes a free-throw contest late, Auburn’s 92% at the stripe is the ultimate equalizer.
I’ll gladly take the points with the team that shoots better from deep, better from the line, and is catching value after a misleading blowout loss.
