Saint Mary’s once again profiles as one of the most balanced teams in the country. The Gaels can absolutely drag games into the mud defensively, but they are not offensively limited. Paulius Murauskas has been a force inside all season, giving Saint Mary’s a reliable scoring option in the half court while also anchoring the glass. With Joshua Dent and Mikey Lewis providing steady guard play, this is a group that values possessions and rarely beats itself.
What really stands out in this matchup is how well Saint Mary’s matches Gonzaga physically. The Gaels rebound extremely well on both ends, protect the rim, and do a great job of limiting second chance points. Andrew McKeever and the rest of the frontcourt give Bennett the size needed to challenge Gonzaga in the paint, which is critical against a Bulldogs team that thrives on interior scoring.
Gonzaga is clearly elite when it can dominate the paint and play downhill. That becomes much harder here.
