That said, this number feels inflated because it assumes Texas cannot play at Vanderbilt’s level for forty minutes.
The Longhorns have already shown that is not true. The win at Alabama was not a fluke. Texas scored efficiently against one of the most athletic teams in the country and proved it can trade punches in a high level SEC environment.
The key here is Jordan Pope. When Texas has beaten elite competition, Pope has been aggressive and central to everything they do offensively. Vanderbilt wants to speed teams up and force mistakes, but Pope has shown that when he gets into rhythm, he can score in isolation, off movement, and from deep. That gives Texas a ceiling Vanderbilt has not had to defend consistently yet.
There is also a matchup edge inside that matters. Vanderbilt allowed LSU to score heavily in the paint, and that opens the door for Matas Vokietaitis to re establish himself. Texas does not need him to dominate, but any interior production forces Vanderbilt to collapse and eases pressure on the guards. That is how you survive against a defense built on steals and ball pressure.
Texas is not the cleaner team, but they are the more volatile one. Catching points with a team that has already proven it can beat top tier competition is exactly the type of spot to buy low. Vanderbilt may still win, but asking them to separate by multiple possessions against a Texas team that can score in bunches feels like too much.
This shapes up as a competitive game throughout, and five points is simply too many to pass up.
