BYU deserves real credit for what it has built under Kevin Young. The Cougars look like a modern program with NBA ideas baked into their offense, and AJ Dybantsa has lived up to every bit of the hype so far. They score efficiently, they have size in the frontcourt, and they are not intimidated by big stages. Winning sixteen of seventeen games does not happen by accident. But this is the type of spot where the jump in competition and environment matters. BYU is entering the teeth of Big 12 play, and this is not a league that allows you to ease into anything. Texas Tech at home is a very different challenge than what the Cougars have consistently seen during this run, especially against an offense that can punish you at all three levels. Texas Tech is playing its best basketball of the season. The Red Raiders have quietly flipped the switch after an uneven start and are now operating with confidence on the offensive end. The win over Duke was not just impressive, it showed how high this team’s ceiling really is. Even in the loss at Houston, Tech proved it could trade blows in one of the hardest road environments in the country. JT Toppin is the best player on the floor in this game, and that matters. He is dominant on the glass, efficient as a scorer, and relentless in how he wears teams down over forty minutes. BYU has size, but it has not faced many players who combine physicality and skill the way Toppin does. Add in Christian Anderson running the show and shooting over forty percent from deep, and this offense becomes extremely difficult to slow down. The defensive numbers for Texas Tech are not elite, but this game is more about offensive pressure than lockdown defense. BYU wants to score, and Tech is more than comfortable turning this into a game where execution matters possession by possession. At home, with a crowd that feeds off momentum, the Red Raiders have a clear edge in shot making and experience in games that come down to late stretches. BYU is very good, but no team stays hot forever. This feels like a natural regression spot against a surging opponent that is undervalued because of early season results. Texas Tech has the better player, the better environment, and the offense I trust more in a tight conference game.
