Los Angeles Sparks vs. Portland Fire Prediction

Los Angeles most recently allowed 113 points in a four-point home loss to New York, continuing a defensive decline that has driven its losing streak. The Sparks then traded Kelsey Plum to Phoenix for Monique Akoa Makani and two draft picks. Plum had not played since June 21 because of a lower-leg injury, but the move removes any chance of the team regaining its leading scorer and creator for a late postseason push. Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby and Ariel Atkins must now carry an offense entering a complete transition.

Portland’s latest defeat was a 112-98 home loss to Indiana, with Caitlin Clark recording 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Fire struggled to contain another elite backcourt. The result was Portland’s fourth consecutive loss, but the offense still reached 98 points against one of the league’s hottest teams. Carla Leite leads the attack with 15.3 points and 6.0 assists per game, while Bridget Carleton, Megan Gustafson and Emily Engstler give the Fire several capable secondary options.

Los Angeles has beaten Portland twice in 2026 when including their preseason meeting, with the regular-season matchup ending in an 89-72 Sparks victory on June 7. Hamby scored 22 points, Ogwumike recorded 20 points and 17 rebounds and Plum added 16 in that result. Portland received 16 points and 12 rebounds from Gustafson, but its supporting cast could not match the Sparks’ established chemistry. That advantage is far less convincing now that Los Angeles is playing without Plum and introducing another guard immediately after the trade.

Los Angeles Sparks vs. Portland Fire Best Bet

Neither team deserves significant trust, but Portland has the more favorable circumstances. The Fire are at home, showed offensive life against Indiana and now face an opponent that ranks near the bottom of the league in both rebounding and points allowed. Los Angeles may remain competitive through Ogwumike and Hamby, but its six-game slide and abrupt roster change make it difficult to support the Sparks in a near pick’em. Portland should produce enough energy and perimeter creation to finally reverse the matchup and end its losing streak.
