The Liberty won Monday’s opener 95-83, extending Seattle’s losing streak to nine games and improving to 18-13. The final score does not fully reflect how competitive the Storm remained, as Seattle reduced a double-digit deficit to three points late in the third quarter before New York responded with a decisive 15-0 run. Seattle has fallen to 6-26 overall and 2-15 on the road, but its young core continues to produce enough offense to challenge larger spreads. Flau’jae Johnson scored a game-high 25 points Monday, while Natisha Hiedeman and Dominique Malonga each contributed 17. The Storm shot 40.8% from the field and committed damaging mistakes at important moments, yet their primary scorers created enough penetration and transition opportunities to keep New York from pulling away until the final quarter.
New York has won five of its past six games, with Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu driving the recent improvement. Stewart finished Monday with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Jones added 20 points and seven rebounds, and Ionescu scored 18. The Liberty’s stars controlled the opening stages, but the game was not secured until the reserve unit sparked the 15-0 run that stretched a three-point advantage to 18.
