New York enters at 22-14 while Chicago is 13-22, but the gap between these teams has looked significantly smaller whenever they have shared the floor this season.
New York has steadied itself after an uneven stretch, beating Los Angeles 85-81 and Connecticut 82-75 in its last two games. The Liberty remain one of the league's strongest teams when Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones are functioning together, but they have also repeatedly allowed inferior opponents to hang around deep into games.

Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with an 82-80 win over Seattle. That was an important response after losses to Indiana, Seattle and Golden State, and it continued a season-long pattern in which the Sky have often been more competitive than their record suggests. Chicago has already accumulated numerous single-digit defeats and has been particularly difficult to put away when its veteran guards can control the pace.
Sydney Taylor has also emerged as an important offensive piece alongside Skylar Diggins, Natasha Cloud, Courtney Vandersloot and Kamilla Cardoso. Taylor's breakout stretch earlier this season included 24 points in her first start against New York, and Chicago's combination of experienced ball handlers and interior size has repeatedly forced the Liberty into much tighter games than expected.
The head-to-head results are difficult to ignore. New York won the first meeting 96-95 on June 17 after Chicago led by 15 early, with Taylor putting the Sky ahead 95-94 in the closing seconds before the Liberty answered. The rematch on July 22 followed almost the same script, with Chicago building another 12-point lead before New York escaped 95-94.
That means the Liberty are technically 2-0 against Chicago this season, but they have outscored the Sky by only two total points across 80 minutes. New York needed late comebacks in both games and never came remotely close to covering a 4.5-point number. With the third meeting again taking place in Chicago, there is little evidence from the season series that this matchup deserves to be priced as comfortably as the records suggest.
