Washington and Phoenix are scheduled for a 10:10 PM ET tipoff at Mortgage Matchup Center, with the Mystics laying only 2.5 points on the road. Washington enters at 22-15 and firmly in the playoff picture, while the Mercury sit at 13-24 after losing four of their last five games.
The Mystics have quietly become one of the WNBA's stronger second-half teams. Washington has won 10 of its last 13 games after Sunday's 105-100 road victory over Portland, with Shakira Austin, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen giving the team multiple ways to attack. Austin erupted for 31 points against the Fire, while Iriafen added another double-double.

Phoenix has been moving in the opposite direction. The Mercury lost 99-89 to Atlanta on Saturday and 88-85 to Portland in the game before that, leaving their lone victory in the last five against Los Angeles. The defense has been a recurring problem, with Phoenix allowing nearly 88 points per game for the season.
These teams also met in Washington on August 9, and there was very little competitive about it. The Mystics rolled to a 95-75 victory, holding Phoenix to one of its weakest offensive performances of the month while winning by 20 points. Tuesday's -2.5 spread asks Washington to reproduce only a fraction of that margin.
Phoenix still has dangerous individual talent. Kahleah Copper scored 38 points against Atlanta last time out, while Alyssa Thomas recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. The problem has been turning those performances into wins. Even strong nights from the Mercury's stars have not consistently covered the team's defensive issues.
Washington has also demonstrated much more balance. Citron leads the perimeter attack, Austin has become a major presence inside and Iriafen continues to impact games on both ends. That combination creates several matchup problems for a Phoenix defense that already surrendered 95 points to this group only a few weeks ago.

A road favorite always carries some added risk, but -2.5 is a manageable number given the current trajectories. Washington has already proven it can dominate this matchup, enters with substantially better recent form and needs only a one-possession victory to cover. Unless Phoenix suddenly finds a defensive level it has rarely shown lately, the Mystics should take care of business again.
