Golden State and New York are scheduled for an 8:10 PM ET tipoff, with the Liberty slight 1.5-point home favorites. New York is -122 on the moneyline while Golden State is available at +102, creating essentially a pick'em game between two teams capable of making noise in October.
Golden State entered this road swing at 26-11 and in second place overall, while New York sits at 23-15. Golden State Valkyries vs. New York Liberty Prediction
The Valkyries delivered an even bigger statement Monday. They went into Minnesota and beat the 31-8 Lynx 80-66, snapping a nine-game franchise losing streak against Minnesota and holding one of the league's best offenses to its lowest total of the season. Golden State has built a genuine contender around defense rather than simply trying to outscore elite teams.
That style has already given New York major problems twice this season. Golden State went into Barclays Center and won 87-70 in May, then beat the Liberty again 76-67 in San Francisco in June. New York has failed to reach 71 points in either meeting and enters Thursday 0-2 against the Valkyries this year.
New York knows exactly how difficult that defense can be. Jonquel Jones recently pointed to Golden State's rotations and cohesion against Minnesota as the type of defensive standard the Liberty themselves are trying to reach. Leonie Fiebich's return strengthens New York considerably on that end, but Golden State has been operating at this level for the entire season rather than trying to rediscover it late.
Fatigue is the legitimate reason Golden State is an underdog. The Valkyries play at Connecticut on Wednesday before traveling to Brooklyn for Thursday night's game, while New York has been off since Saturday. That rest discrepancy cannot be ignored, especially this late in the season.
Still, Golden State's style is unusually well suited to surviving a back-to-back. The Valkyries play at the slowest pace in the league, protect possessions and rely on a deep defensive structure rather than one superstar carrying an enormous offensive workload. That can limit how damaging tired legs become, particularly if Golden State again drags New York into a half-court game.

At plus money, the matchup history is too difficult to ignore. Golden State has beaten New York twice by a combined 26 points, just went into Minnesota and beat the league's best team by 14 and owns the defense most capable of frustrating the Liberty's collection of stars. The schedule favors New York, but the matchup favors Golden State enough to take the slight road underdog in one of the games of the week.
