WeBeatTheSpreads' Premium Derrick Lewis vs. Sergey Spivak Picks

The UFC fight between Derrick Lewis and Sergey Spivak proves to be a large one for both men, as Lewis sits as the 7th-ranked fighter, while Spivak is 12th. The winner will move one step closer to the top, while a loss for either moves them to the bottom of the rankings. Lewis and Spivak come into this fight with a lot to prove and are eager to make a statement in the division. Spivak is a massive favorite entering this fight, with odds north of -300, but Lewis is no stranger to being the underdog and coming away with the win. What should we expect here?

Derrick Lewis, also known as "The Black Beast," is one of the most powerful strikers in the world with a professional record of 26 wins and ten losses. Lewis is known primarily for his knockout power and ability to finish fights with one punch. Lewis has won 21 of his 26 wins by knockout, including his last win over Chris Daukaus, and he will be looking to end a losing streak in this bout. Lewis has lost back-to-back fights against Sergey Pavlovich and Tai Tuivasa, and he is 1-3 in his last four. Lewis, at 37 years old, needs a win at this point if he ever wants to fight for the title again, as a loss will drop his ranking significantly. Lewis has fought his way to two title shots, losing to Daniel Cormier and Ciryl Gane, and he seems to always be in a fight with his punching power.

Sergey Spivak, the Moldovian, is a well-rounded fighter who has been making a name for himself in the heavyweight division. He has a professional record of 15 wins and three losses. Spivak is a solid striker who also possesses a strong grappling game, and he has the ability to finish fights with strikes or submissions. Of his 15 wins, seven have come by knockout, while six have come by submission. Spivak had a slower start in the UFC, starting 1-2 in his last three, but he has turned it on lately, going 5-1 since his 1-2 start. His last win was one of his biggest, as he stopped Augusto Sakai in the second round.

On the one hand, Lewis is the more powerful striker, and his aggressive style has proven to be effective in the past. He is never counted out in a fight due to his ability to land a punch out of nowhere and put his opponent out. He has done it countless times in his career. One of my favorites was his fight against Curtis Blaydes. Lewis looked beat, and he had nothing going; then, out of nowhere, Blaydes shot for a takedown on Lewis and Lewis landed a beautiful uppercut that put Blaydes on his back and unconscious. Even when it seems like Lewis is the underdog and is out of a fight, he can land the fight-ender, which makes him a dangerous fighter to fade.

On the other hand, Spivak will likely look to close the distance and take the fight to the ground. He will be looking to use his grappling skills to control the fight and eventually find a finish. Spivak will be better off grinding Lewis out and tiring him out because if he engages in a striking war, it will not be good news for him.

Lewis and Spivak come into this fight eager for a win for different reasons. Spivak needs the win to keep climbing the rankings and earn a title shot, while Lewis needs the win to stay relevant in the top 10. Ultimately, I can't pass on this line for Lewis. He always lives for a knockout, and the price on Fanduel is too good to pass on. Another bet I love that is only available on Fanduel (as far as I have seen) is the fight to end by knockout at -220. Yes, it is juicy, but this fight IS going to end by knockout. Lewis is hittable, and we have seen him hit the mat more lately, but he still has his power. Spivak has also been hittable, and that is not a good sign against one of the hardest hitters in the UFC. This fight ends by knockout, and I will take my chances on the incredible line for it to be Lewis.
