Chris Gutierrez is making his return to the octagon for the first time since ending Frankie Edgar's career in the most depressing way possible. Seriously. A badass knockout has never made me sadder. Pedro Muhoz, on the other hand, is returning to action for the first time since getting brutally finished by Sean O'Malley. I do not care what you say, that is my story, and I am sticking to it. This might be one of the trickiest fights on the card to bet on, but I think there is an obvious pick.
Pedro Munhoz vs. Chris Gutierrez Prediction
While Pedro is winless in five of his last six fights, that does not tell the whole story. All four of his losses came against future Hall of Famers Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, and current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Sure, the first three guys are old, but they are still murderers row compared to Gutierrez's schedule, excluding Frankie.
I believe that gap in experience will surely show on Saturday night, but there is also another big factor to consider. Pedro is 36. While that is not old for Jets quarterback Zach Wilson's standards, it certainly is for MMA. Meanwhile, Chris is 31 years old and has looked phenomenal in his last two fights.
Despite age, both of these fighters are incredibly durable. Neither fighter has ever succumbed to strikes in their careers, but I still believe that Pedro has more ways to get this done. Both fighters are likely going to tear each other's legs apart and land devastating blows, but I believe Pedro has a history of being more resilient.
Pedro also has a much more proven ground game and has eight submissions on his record compared to just one for Gutierrez. When taking this into account, I just do not believe that Gutierrez is deserving of the -200 price tag that oddsmakers currently have him at. While I am not convinced that there will be a finish in this fight, I believe that Pedro's diverse approach will get him the win.
