The boxing world will turn its attention to the much-anticipated super middleweight championship bout between the legendary Canelo Alvarez and British challenger John Ryder. Ben Rajavuori shares his best bet for the fight.
ANALYSIS

On May 6th, the boxing world will turn its attention to the much-anticipated super middleweight championship bout between the legendary Canelo Alvarez and British challenger John Ryder. Alvarez has a remarkable career record of 58-2, with his only losses coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Dmitrii Bivol. Although his most recent loss against Bivol was at a higher weight class, Alvarez will be returning to his comfort zone for this fight as it will be at super middleweight. Alvarez holds all four world titles at super middleweight, which he will defend against John Ryder.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder Prediction

Alvarez's long winning streak came to an end after his loss to Bivol, who comprehensively outclassed him. To his credit, though, it was outside his normal weight class. On top of that, some may question the convincingness of his win against Gennady Golovkin since Golovkin was 40 years old and past his prime. Therefore, Alvarez will be looking to put on a statement win in front of his hometown fans of 50,000 in Mexico. Alvarez is fighting in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico, and the crowd will be absolutely rocking, especially on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

John Ryder is no pushover and has improved tremendously over the years. He may not be as scary as other British opponents who have challenged Alvarez, but he is an aggressive fighter who will not go down without a fight. Ryder lost to Callum Smith in 2019, but many believe he was robbed of the victory. He also defeated Daniel Jacobs, who had previously fought both Golovkin and Alvarez.

Ryder's aggressive style of boxing may work against him in this fight, as Alvarez is a counterpuncher who excels at picking apart opponents who are overly aggressive. However, if Ryder can survive the early rounds and find his timing, he may be able to get some work done. It's if he can survive that is the question.

Ryder typically starts with a low-hand jab before moving in to rough up his opponent. While this jab has its advantages, it may prove to be a problem for Ryder in this fight, as Alvarez is an expert at reading opponents and may be able to capitalize on Ryder's predictable jab. However, Ryder has shown that he can adapt his style in the middle of fights, and he may be able to do so against Alvarez if we get to the later rounds.

Given Alvarez's dominance at super middleweight and Ryder's aggressive style of boxing, this fight should be exciting. My pick for this bout is the under 8.5 rounds. While Ryder may be able to survive the early rounds, I believe that Alvarez will ultimately pick him apart and end the fight before the ninth round.

This is a thrilling fight between two top-level boxers, but Alvarez is a step ahead of Ryder, and his style should fit well with the style of fight Ryder will bring. I think after a few rounds of reading Ryder, Alvarez will be able to put together the knockout counter combination on Ryder.
