Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo Prediction: Can Charlo Become the Double Champion?

One of the biggest boxing matches in a long time occurs this Saturday night when Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo meet in the ring in Las Vegas. This bout is the first one in a long time to be between two current undisputed champs, with Canelo holding all four belts in his weight division, and Charlo holding all four in his weight division. The winner will be the undisputed Super Middleweight champion, and Charlo has a unique opportunity to become the double chance. However, the books do not favor his odds, as he is a +330 underdog in this fight. Can he do it?

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo Prediction

Alvarez enters the arena as the favorite, though the odds favor him slightly less than in previous fights. Alvarez has displayed an impressive level of comfort in the super middleweight division and boasts more experience in high-stakes bouts. In contrast, Charlo is stepping up two weight divisions, making this not only a test of skill but also a test of his adaptability to the increased weight and competition.

Alvarez has one more loss than Charlo on his record, standing at 59-2, but it's interesting to look at the losses. The more recent loss to Dmitrii Bivol was at light heavyweight, and his only loss before that was to Floyd Mayweather Jr. at super welterweight. Canelo is still undefeated at super middleweight, which is worth noting in this fight. It is undoubtedly his most comfortable weight class and the one he has been most successful in.

While Alvarez holds the edge across various aspects of boxing, but Charlo, even stepping up in weight, boasts a notable size advantage. Standing at 6 feet with a 73-inch reach, Charlo towers over Alvarez's 5-foot-8 frame and 70-inch reach. This height and reach differential may prove advantageous, even against a fighter of Alvarez's caliber. Charlo may be able to maintain range and keep out of the way of Canelo's persistent offense and pick him apart off his back foot.

At the end of the day, I think Charlo is the best boxer in his division, evident by his belt, but Canelo is just too much at super middleweight. Even though Charlo has a reach advantage, Canelo's frame is stronger, and what he lacks in height or reach, he makes up for in power. Canelo loves to fight aggressively, and his pressure should wear on Charlo over the course of the fight. Canelo hasn't been finishing guys like he had early in his career, however, and Charlo has proven to be extremely tough, so I think Canelo will win this fight by decision. Charlo has never been knocked out in his career, and Canelo has gone to a decision in three-straight fights. I'm on Canelo by scorecards.
