Garry has responded impressively since suffering his first loss. He took Rakhmonov the distance in December 2024, then beat dangerous knockout artist Carlos Prates before earning a unanimous decision over former champion Belal Muhammad last November. That Muhammad victory pushed Garry directly into the championship picture.
The physical dimensions make Garry different from many of Makhachev's previous opponents. He owns approximately five inches in height and four inches in reach, giving him a legitimate opportunity to make Makhachev work through distance before establishing wrestling control. Garry's movement and patient striking style also make him much more interested in winning rounds than forcing unnecessary exchanges.
That does not necessarily make the upset likely. Makhachev's takedown defense sits at 91%, he averages more than three takedowns per 15 minutes and already showed against Della Maddalena that his wrestling translates against elite welterweights. Garry may survive positions that have ended fights against smaller opponents, but consistently winning them is a much different challenge.
The matchup instead points toward another methodical five-round performance. Garry has proven extremely difficult to finish, even surviving Rakhmonov, while Makhachev had no issue taking the safest route to victory when he won the welterweight belt. Garry's length should make certain exchanges competitive enough to discourage unnecessary risks from the champion.
