Louisiana Tech vs. FIU Prediction, Pick, Odds: Louisiana Tech Is In Good Hands With QB Hank Bachmeier

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs took a step back in Sonny Cumbie's first season as head coach for the program.

The Bulldogs went 2-6 in the Conference USA and 3-9 overall last year. We'll call it a rebuilding phase for the Bulldogs.

A winning season from Louisiana Tech would be something for Louisiana Tech football fans to get excited about.

They'll take on the Florida International Golden Panthers in a Conference USA matchup in Week 0. FIU also finished 2-6 in conference play and 4-8 in Mike MacIntyre's first year at the helm.

Like Louisiana Tech, Florida International has a long way to go before being competitive. The Golden Panthers got hit with the other side of the transfer portal. They lost much of their talent and probably won't recover quickly enough.

Conference games are massive early on. This game should be an exciting one.

Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for Saturday's game between the Florida International Panthers vs. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Louisiana Tech vs. FIU Prediction

Grayson James will look to get Florida International off to a hot start. He added nearly 2,000 yards passing and threw 11 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. That was the junior's first season as a starter. He's got more experience, but you'd have to imagine he'll continue to throw interceptions at a high rate. FIU lost WR Tyrese Chambers to Maryland and TE Rivaldo Fairweather to Auburn. Kris Mitchell and Dean Patterson are the two receivers that can make plays for James. But FIU lost talent. There's no denying that. The offensive line also lost Lyndell Hudson to Florida, Shamar Hobdy-Lee, and Juius Pierce to Middle Tennessee. They added Travis Burke from the portal, but he won't compensate for all the losses. Meanwhile, the defense allowed 37 points per game last year. The defense also gave up more than 450 yards. FIU has a capable pass rush, and the run defense isn't terrible. Again, it's hard to know what to expect. FIU lost more players to the transfer portal on defense. But statistically, the pass rush was always the bread and butter for the program. On the other hand, the Bobcats added transfer quarterback Hank Bachmeier at quarterback. He was a highly regarded prospect in 2021 but hasn't developed into what many analysts expected. At this point, Bachmeier has no more excuses. Louisiana Tech added Tre Harris from Ole Miss and still has Smoke Harris, who has caught nearly 225 passes in five seasons. There's also Cyrus Allen, who added close to 23 yards per catch last season. Bachmeier also has another deep threat in Kyle Maxwell. This is the year Bachmeier should shine. The offensive line has the experience, and the two running backs, between Marquis Crosby and Charvis Thornton, should work wonders. Crosby is unexpected to play in this game, but Thornton is still a quality running back. Crosby's absence should allow former Baylor running back Craig Williams to get in some snaps. He averaged six yards per carry for Baylor before coming to Louisiana Tech. With that said, I'm on Louisiana Tech in this matchup. The Bulldogs are in a much better spot with a veteran quarterback like Bachmeier under center.
