Navy and Notre Dame are not strangers, as they play each other pretty much every season. Notre Dame enters into the second year of the Marcus Freeman era. Navy enters into their first year under new head coach Brian Newberry, who was the defensive coordinator for the midshipmen the last few seasons under head coach Ken Niumatalolo, who had been at the helm for Navy since 2007 before being let go at the end of last year.

Notre Dame vs. Navy Prediction

The carryover will not be as drastic for most programs as Newberry has already been in and around the program since he took over as Navy’s defensive coordinator in 2019. In the off-season, Notre Dame picked up one of the most high-profile transfers in the country from Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.

Hartman has a ton of experience and holds a lot of ACC/Wake Forest passing records as he lit the world on fire with their high-powered offense/passing attack. Hartman is the new QB1 for the Irish, who desperately needed an established QB as it was a revolving door at the position for Notre Dame over the last few seasons. Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner were average at best, and Hartman is a significant upgrade for the Fighting Irish at the position. Speaking of Irish, this game will be played in Ireland and needs to be taken into account for handicapping purposes.

Notre Dame has had a lot of turnover the past few seasons at the head coach and QB positions, and now having to travel across the world for their season opener could make things a bit more complicated for Notre Dame. Last year’s Ireland game featured Nebraska and Northwestern, with the Cornhuskers as 12-point favorites and ended up losing outright. I’m not comparing Nebraska and Notre Dame by any means, but these types of games on a neutral field involving a lot of travel inherently give a small advantage to the underdog in these types of games.

Last year, we saw Navy nearly pull off a huge upset in this matchup on a neutral field, and while Hartman is a huge upgrade, I think this game will be closer than many people think. With that being said, I am rolling with Navy +21 at -110 for 1.5u as my most confident College Football play of the day for week 0.
