Oregon State vs. San Jose State Prediction: Should You Fade DJ Uiagalelei, Beavers?

There’s a different energy in Corvallis, Oregon, as we head into the 2023 college football season. They finally have their quarterback, or so they think. DJ Uiagalelei will take over for the Beavers under center in 2023 after transferring from Clemson. He’s facing a San Jose State team that already has a game under their belt. Will the Spartans catch Oregon State sleeping in their first 2023 contest?

Oregon State vs. San Jose State Prediction

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not high on this Spartans team; they just got smoked by USC in their season opener. I am happy to back a team that’s already played this season against the Beavers, who will not only be making their 2023 debut tonight, but will be rolling out a new quarterback.

Let’s talk about DJ Uiagalelei, who is only starting tonight because he lost the starting job at Clemson. He was a highly-touted recruit entering the ACC, but he should have lost his starting job much earlier than he did. Dabo Sweeney has a history of having a long leash for his starting QB, and he proved that to be true with Uiagalelei. I don’t think the Oregon State faithful should be as excited as they are for their new starter…

San Jose State’s defense is Swiss cheese. They will give up some points in this game, but Chevan Cordeiro and the SJSU offense can keep up. They put up some points against USC last week and now have a game under their belt to make some defensive adjustments. Oregon State won’t have that same luxury and has all the pressure on their side tonight. The Spartans have no pressure at all, and they’ll be playing loose in their second contest at their own stadium. Don’t be surprised if the Spartans catch Oregon State sleeping, especially if DJ’s nerves get to him like we saw at Clemson.

San Jose State got going in the second half last week. I’m willing to bet their offense takes some of that momentum into this afternoon’s matchup against another ranked opponent. Expect Cordeiro to take advantage of Oregon State’s suspect secondary in this one, keeping it within the number.

Only 25% of bets are coming in on the home team, but the line has moved two points towards the Spartans. This reverse line movement is a great sign for SJSU backers. Fade the public and back the sharp Spartans to keep this one within two touchdowns. Don’t be surprised if DJ’s nerves get to him in the first half, and they end up keeping this game tied up at half.
