Iowa vs. Iowa State Prediction

The two teams will renew one of the oldest rivalries in college football, and the winner of this game will be awarded the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

The two teams first clashed in 1894 when Iowa State won 16-8. I am assuming that they undercashed in that game in typical Iowa fashion. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 46-23.

Iowa State defeated Northern Iowa 30-9 in Week 1. Freshman starting quarterback Rocco Becht made his first career start in Week 1 and played okay. Becht took care of the football going 10/13, throwing for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Iowa State rushed for 134 yards, led by sophomore Cartevious Norton, who rushed for 49 yards.

Iowa State was good on the defensive side of the ball, allowing 372 yards. In addition, the Cyclones had two key takeaways that helped propel them to a win.

Iowa enters play ranked 25th in the nation. Last year, the Hawkeyes were putrid on offense but possessed one of the best defenses in the nation.

Iowa went out and added Michigan transfer Cade McNamara. McNamara lost his starting Quarterback job to JJ McCarthy at Michigan. McNamara threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Iowa rushed for 88 yards, led by sophomore running back Kaleb Johnson. Tight end Luke Lachley led the Hawkeyes in receiving yards (73).

The Hawkeyes defense bent but did not break until the fourth quarter. Iowa allowed 329 yards in the win but just one touchdown, which came in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the Iowa defense had one takeaway via an interception.

Iowa vs. Iowa State Pick

There is a significant talent gap between these two teams.

Iowa State was difficult to watch on offense in Week 1. Led by a freshman Quarterback who lacks experience, it will be challenging for the Cyclones to move the football consistently.

On the flip side, Iowa State did not impress me against a bad Northern Iowa offense. Cade McNamara and the Iowa offense can put up points and cover this -4 number.
