Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia Prediction

These two teams first met on October 26, 1895. West Virginia won the game 8-0. Since then, it has been mostly Pitt as the Panthers lead the all-time series in the Backyard Bowl 62-40-3. The Panthers won the matchup a season ago.

Pitt enters play with a 1-1 record. The Panthers beat Wofford in Week 1 and followed that up with a home loss to Cincinnati in a game in which they were favored by 6.5 points.

The Panthers are led by Boston College transfer Phil Jurkovec. Jurkovec was considered an NFL talent before an injury that kept him off the field. Jurkovec has thrown for 393 yards and four touchdowns in his first two games with Pitt.

The Panthers have been a Running Back by committee offense thus far, but the leader of the run game has been senior Daniel Carter. Carter has rushed for a team-high 90 yards and one touchdown.

Tight End Grant Bartholomew has led the Panthers in the passing game, racking up a team-best 118 yards on five catches and one touchdown.

The Panthers defense has been up and down. They have looked impressive at times but need to be better moving forward if they want to rack up wins in conference play.

The Mouinatnwers will begin play on Saturday night with a 1-1 record.

West Virginia lost to a very good Penn State team in Week 1 and rebounded with a win over Duquesne in Week 2.

Junior Quarterback Garret Greene will lead the Mouinatnweers offense. Greene has thrown for 402 yards and four touchdowns in his first two weeks at the helm.

Sophomore Running Back CJ Donaldson Jr. has led West Virginia in the run game. Donaldson Jr. has rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown.

The most impressive Wide Receiver for the Mountaineers has been freshman Hudson Clement. Clement leads the team with five catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns.

West Virginia looked much better defensively in Week 2, but there are a lot of question marks surrounding this defense.

Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia Pick

This is a great buy-low spot on the Panthers after a bad loss in Week 2.

Pitt has the better defense and quarterback play in this game.

West Virginia will struggle to string together stops in this game, and their offense is not good enough to overcome poor defense.

Pick: Pittsburgh +3 -110 is currently the best odds. Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds
