Rutgers opened up the season with a resounding blowout victory over Northwestern by the score of 24-7. They outgained the Wildcats 285 to 201, as their defense shined for most of the afternoon. Rutgers was able to force two turnovers as their defense pretty much dominated Northwestern in all facets.

Rutgers was then able to follow this up with another strong defensive performance against Temple as the Scarlet Knights blew out Temple in Week 2 by a score of 36-7. Their defense shined once again as Rutgers outgained Temple 452 to 298 and were once again able to force two turnovers so early on; they have been ballhawks on that side of the ball. Just looking at these defensive stats and box scores in a vacuum, you would think this Rutgers defensive group is elite, right? Well, I am not so sure.

To add more context, Northwestern is one of the worst power 5 teams in the country and was recently a home underdog to UTEP last week... that's right, UTEP. Northwestern is in for a dreadful season, and it is hard to make any assumptions on what kind of team Rutgers is based on their performance against them.

Fast forward to Week 2, and it's the same story against a really bad Temple team. Temple nearly lost at home in their first game to Akron, who is usually one of the worst teams in the MAC and is on their way to being one of the worst group of 5 teams yet again. Now Rutgers has to face an actual solid power 5 team that has already faced some stiff competition and been tested a bit.

Rutgers' opponent, Virginia Tech, comes into this matchup with a record of 1-1 on the season as they defeated Old Dominion and then lost to Purdue at home. Grant Wells is entering his second season as the lead signal caller for Virginia Tech, and while he has had some up-and-down games, he has a lot of experience and is overall more talented, in my opinion, than any quarterback that Rutgers has.

The Rutgers defense is being put on a pedestal a bit too early as they have simply done their job and shut down two really bad teams, which only proves that they are not a bad defense, and it is yet to be seen whether they are anything spectacular. I also believe the Virginia Tech offensive unit is due for some positive regression after a tough/weather-delayed game against Purdue.

In that game against the Boilermakers, the Hokies greatly struggled on third down as they went 2-12, but showed they have the capability of being a solid third down team in their opening game as they went 8-16 on third downs against Old Dominion.

Overall, I think Rutgers is going to be a little shell-shocked as they are finally playing a team of similar talent, and I had this game lined closer to a Pk, so the fact that Virginia Tech is getting a full touchdown on the line is a lot of value to me.

This should be a fairly close and low-scoring game, which I think typically gives value to the underdog. With that being said, I am rolling with Virginia Tech +7 at -110 for 1.5u as my most confident College Football play of the day for today's action.
