ANALYSIS

Texas A&M vs. Tennessee Prediction, Pick, Odds: Can Max Johnson, Aggies Cover?

We've got an SEC matchup on tap in this NCAA football Week 7 prediction piece, as the Tennessee Volunteers host the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Vols are ranked No. 19 after losing during their only road game played this season, failing to score against Florida. Led by quarterback Joe Milton, who has one of the strongest arms in the FBS, expect Tennessee to continue channeling its rushing attack, which has led to seven rushing touchdowns and at least 6.0 YPC in its last two games played.

The Aggies are coming off of a tough home loss to Alabama, where they looked like they may pull off the outright upset as home underdogs multiple times. However, turnovers down the stretch and lack of discipline cost Texas A&M, who is also playing with their backup quarterback, Max Johnson, due to an injury to Connor Weigman suffered a couple of weeks ago.

Oddsmakers at FanDuel Sportsbook expect a tight matchup between these two SEC programs, giving the Aggies +3.5 ATS on the road. The point total line is set to 55.5 with -110 odds on either side, while the Vols are -178 with their moneyline odds. NCAAF handicapper Matt MacKay is here to share his latest prediction and pick for Tennessee vs. Texas A&M.

Texas A&M vs. Tennessee Prediction

Unfortunately for Tennessee's run game, which has begun to prosper in the last couple of games following their loss to Florida, Texas A&M is fifth out of 133 FBS defenses in rushing yards allowed per carry at 2.6 YPC. This includes only 0.2 touchdown rate on carries, while also ranking 36th best in opponent completion percentage allowed at 55.4 percent.

Tennessee is also a good pass defense, holding Spencer Rattler from throwing a touchdown in Week 6. The run defense is good but not great, so this is where the Aggies will have to attack with Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels, each averaging over 5.0 YPC. Texas A&M has hit four of six overs in the six games they've played, but this is feeling like a smash mouth game plan from both teams, creating a game script favoring the under 55.5 total point line.

The Aggies have scored under 30 points in two of their last three games, while Tennessee has recorded over 40 points in two consecutive games following its loss as a road favorite against the Gators in Week 4. Each team has covered the spread at least three times as well. We're getting the hook in this matchup at -3.5 ATS for Tennessee as home favorites, but the previous head-to-head matchups have been won by the Aggies, despite occurring in 2020 and 2016.

The Vols have been gashed in the passing attack at times, allowing nearly 65 percent of passes to be completed this season, even though they are coming off of a resounding 41-20 win over the Gamecocks. Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson looked good during the team's win against Arkansas and played well at times against Alabama, looking good enough to compete on the road against Tennessee.

Let's throw a unit on Texas A&M to cover +3.5 ATS against Tennessee on the road in Week 7.
