Betting on Sam Houston tonight isn’t for the faint of heart. This team has gotten close to covering and winning games for the better half of the last month, but they have yet to break the seal and get a win. If they can’t get a win tonight at home against UTEP, they might not get an FBS win all season.
Luckily for the Bearkats, UTEP has the 121st-ranked rush defense in FBS. What do the Bearkats do? They run the ball early and often. Sam Houston State finally gets a matchup against a horrid rush defense at home for the first time this season. Tonight is the night they get their first FBS win in program history.
Don’t sleep on the Bearkats defense, either. They have one of the best linebackers in the country in Trevor Williams. This kid has put up double digit tackles in every single game this season, coming off debatably his most dominant performance where he recorded 11 solo tackles. Williams has kept the Bearkats in games all season, tonight is finally the night he gets his first FBS win.
UTEP’s starting QB Gavin Hardison is a game time decision tonight, and with the spread up to -3.5 for the Bearkats, I’m assuming he won’t be playing tonight. It will probably be Cade McConnell making his third consecutive start for the Miners. McConnell is a significant step down from Hardison under center. He was sacked four times last week, and didn’t throw a single touchdown in 32 attempts. McConnell holds onto the ball too long in the pocket, so expect SHSU to capitalize on the sophomore’s growing pains.
I don’t typically like giving out plays that are as juicy as SHSU ML tonight but I’m worried about them covering the spread in a low-scoring affair. I am extremely confident that they will win this game tonight, but with the total dropping I don’t way to lay the points in what could be a very low-scoring game. Give me the Bearkats on the moneyline to earn their first FBS win in program history.
