Don’t let the Hokies get hot! It might be too late, as they’ve covered in each of the last three weeks. Virginia Tech has yet to lose a conference game at home this season, and they’ve seemingly gotten better every single week. Will they beat a defeated Syracuse team that has struggled to do anything over the last month?

This Syracuse program has taken a step back this season. Sure they’ve played some really good teams over the last few weeks, but they’ve gotten absolutely destroyed by FSU, UNC and Clemson in those contests. At least Virginia Tech was able to keep it competitive with Florida State on the road…
Kyron Drones has leveled up this Hokies offense since taking over for Grant Wells under center. The Baylor transfer has truly gotten better every week, and has even been awarded an ACC Player of the Week nomination. He’s a true duel-threat QB, but Drones will face one of his toughest tests of the season tonight. The Syracuse rush defense is decent, but their pass coverage is weak. Drones is going to have to beat the Orange through the air tonight, something he hasn’t been forced to do really all season.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my four years at Virginia Tech, it’s that you don’t fade the Hokies in a night game. There’s something about Lane Stadium under the lights that just makes these games weird, giving the Hokies an edge. I’m sure they’ll have their loaded recruiting class for next season on the sidelines for this one as well. This is a massive game for Virginia Tech, who can get themselves back to .500 against a struggling Syracuse team.
Syracuse is 0-3 in ACC play so far this season. They do get their starting QB, Garrett Shrader, back for this contest after nursing an arm injury. This is a tough game to hop back into the lineup for, playing on the road in Lane Stadium in front of that packed crowd…
Speaking of Lane Stadium, the Hokies have a new “secret weapon” at wide receiver. Jaylin Lane, the MTSU transfer, has carried this offense over the past few weeks. Expect Lane to be utilized against the 112th-ranked pass defense in the nation tonight. Syracuse’s secondary will have no chance slowing down Drones and Lane, two underrated speedsters who continue to get better every week.
This wasn’t the ideal start for Brent Pry and the Hokies, who had a hurt QB and lost their best WR (Ali Jennings) in the first game of the season. I still trust what Coach Pry is building in Blacksburg, it’s just going to take some time. This defense continues to look better every single week, and they should provide Shrader with some fits under the lights in front of this hungry Hokies fanbase.
It’s clear the Hokies found their guy under center in Kyron Drones, who looks sharper every single game. Back the Hokies to take care of business against the struggling Orange tonight, and don’t sleep on Virginia Tech in the ACC standings, either.
