Southern Miss has been one of the worst teams in the FBS this season, but they have actually been playing a bit better over their past few games. They nearly beat Appalachian State SU on the road as they put up 38 points but ended up losing in a shootout 48-38. Then last week as a small home favorite against ULM, they blew out the Warhawks 34-7 as their defense finally put together a solid effort.

Southern Miss vs. Louisiana Prediction
The problem with this Southern Miss team is that they have not been consistent on either side of the ball and their defense has been atrocious. On the road this season, Southern Miss allowed 66 points to Florida State, 44 points to Arkansas State, 55 points to South Alabama, and 48 to Appalachian State. That is an average of 53.25 points allowed on the road this season... that is simply dreadful, and I would guess that is worst in the nation for any defense on the road to this point.
Southern Miss has been abysmal up front on defense at stopping the run as they allowed 306 rushing yards to FSU, 192 rushing yards to Arkansas State, 287 rushing yards to South Alabama, and 180 yards to Appalachian State for an average of 241 rushing yards allowed per game. Louisiana has had a solid ground game in conference this season as they have averaged 164 yards on the ground against ODU, GA State, South Alabama, Arkansas State, and Texas State.
Those are also some of the better teams in the Sun Belt so Louisiana should have a field day on the ground against the Golden Eagles tonight. The reason for this line dropping is that starting quarterback for ULL, Zeon Chriss, is likely out with an injury which forces Chandler Fields into the starting role. Fields is not like any other third string quarterback in the country as he actually has a lot of experience and would probably be a starter at many other programs. Fields is a junior who totaled 954 passing yards last season and threw for 10 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions.
It is not a huge drop off from Chriss to Fields, especially when you consider this ULL team's offense is based on running the ball and opening up the play action pass. With that being said, I am rolling with Louisiana -8 at -110 for 2U as I expect this ULL squad to put together a solid effort against this dreadful Southern Miss team who should be in a fantastic negative regression spot.
