Eastern Michigan vs. Buffalo Prediction
Eastern Michigan rolls into Buffalo with a record of 5-6, and they have the potential to become bowl eligible with a road win in Buffalo tonight, so the Eagles have all the motivation in the world. On the other side, it has been a dreadful season for Buffalo as they are 3-8 and really have not even been too competitive in many of their games to this point.
Buffalo has also been one of the worst home teams in the country as they are 1-4 straight up at home this season and are 0-2 straight up and ATS when they are a betting favorite at home, including a loss to FCS Fordham in Week 2 when Buffalo was a 24-point favorite. In the only other game where Buffalo was a home favorite, they were 3-point favorites against Bowling Green and lost 24-14 in a game where turned the ball over five times and were outgained by just under 60 yards.
Eastern Michigan comes into this road game with a record of 5-6 and could be one of the worst teams ever to become bowl eligible but they do have something to play for and I expect them to be motivated to the fullest. They are also coming off a less than stellar performance against Akron at home last week where they probably should have lost. In that game, Jeff Undercuffler Jr. was basically Patrick Mahomes on 3rd down, as Akron converted nearly 75% of their 3rd downs on the game, which was very out of character for them.
The Buffalo passing attack is not the strong suit of their team and they want to establish the run to get into 3rd and short or 3rd and manageable, and if Buffalo finds themselves in 3rd and long, I do not believe they will be able to have much success. In Buffalo's last four games against teams other than Kent State (the worst team in college football, Buffalo was only able to score 14 (Against Bowling Green), 13 (against Toledo), 10 (Against Ohio), and 10 against Miami (OH). Buffalo was also only able to score 13 against Akron earlier in the season and the Zips have one of the worst defensive units in the country, let alone the conference.
Eastern Michigan also has a well above-average special teams unit, which could be the difference in this low scoring game, especially in an environment where the weather could play a huge factor. Mitchell Tomasek is averaging 46 yards per punt this season with a long of 72. That is a huge weapon in a game where field position could loom extremely large. EMU's kicker, Jesus Gomez, is 10-13 on the season and 23-29 across the last two seasons. He has a big leg as he is 6-8 from 40-49 yards and 3-6 on field goals of 50+ yards in his career meaning he is extremely reliable under 40 yards across the past two seasons as well (14-15).
Special teams could be the difference tonight and EMU has a huge advantage in that category as well as having a huge motivational advantage with an opportunity to potentially become bowl eligible. With that being said, I am rolling with Eastern Michigan +5.5 at -110 odds for 1.5 units as one of my most confident college football plays of the day for tonight's action.
