For most sports fans, the weekends are about to get much better.
The college football season begins on Saturday with an exciting matchup between Georgia Tech and Florida State in Ireland.
There are also a handful of other matchups, including an intriguing Nevada-SMU matchup that I'll provide a best bet on. In addition, there's still some preseason NFL, UFC Fight Night, the WNBA, and plenty of MLB games, among many other sports.
Here are my five favorite bets as we head into the weekend!
Favorite 5 Weekend Picks
WNBA: Chicago Sky vs. Connecticut Sun: Chicago Sky +10.5 (-110) (Bet $110 to collect $210)
Friday, August 23, 7:30 PM ET
The Chicago Sky have kept both games close in two earlier matchups against the Connecticut Sun. The Sky lost by four points on May 25 and dropped an eight-point loss to the Sun on June 12.
Ultimately, Chicago was home in those two games and will be headed on the road for this matchup. Still, the Sun haven't scored more than 70 points in their last two games, and the Sky can at least defend well enough to keep Connecticut scratching for points. I'll back the Sky at +10.5. It'll be a close game down the stretch.
WNBA: Las Vegas Aces vs. Minnesota Lynx: Aces +2.5 (-120) (Bet $120 to collect $220)
Friday, August 23, 9:30 PM ET
The Minnesota Lynx won 98-87 against the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday, extending Minnesota's lead in the Western Conference over the Aces. However, Las Vegas has enough veterans and talent to earn revenge.
The Lynx have won two of three games against each other. But this is their fourth and final meeting before potentially meeting in the postseason. The Aces will get their act together and defeat the Lynx in this one.
NCAAF: Florida State vs. Georgia Tech: Florida State-10.5 (-105) (Bet $105 to collect $205)
Saturday, August 24, 12:00 PM ET
The Florida State Seminoles were undefeated in the regular season last year and won the ACC. However, the Seminoles were not given a shot in the College Football Playoff due to Jordan Travis' season-ending injury.
While some new guys are on the roster, the Seminoles still have a chip on their shoulder heading into this season. In addition, the offense filled all of the gaps from last year's losses including quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who is back in the ACC with Florida State.
His maturity and overall improvements at Oregon State last season should help him play better in this conference after struggling at Clemson. Take the Seminoles at -10.5.
NCAAF: Montana State vs. New Mexico: New Mexico +12 (-110) (Bet $110 to collect $210)
Saturday, August 24, 4:00 PM ET
Montana State is projected to be one of the best FCS schools this season, while New Mexico is projected to be one of the worst FBS schools.
But you won't find me lying -12 with an FCS school against an FBS one. New Mexico's coaching staff has undergone much change, including Bronco Mendenhall, who is now the head coach. He's got experience from his time at Virginia, coaching in the ACC. He'll have his guys ready.
After all, he's 135-81 in FBS as a head coach.
NCAAF: SMU vs. Nevada: SMU -25 (-115) (Bet $115 to collect $215)
Saturday, August 24, 8:00 PM ET
The SMU squad that finished first in the AAC last season didn't change much this year. The team is filled with seniors, including three graduate transfers on the offensive line. In addition, Preston Stone will return after a marvelous year last season, during which he threw for 3,197 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.
On the other hand, Nevada will have some growing pains with Jeff Choate as the next head coach. It'll take time, especially with Brendon Lewis as the quarterback, who didn't show much of anything last year.
Back SMU against the spread.
