Let’s start with context: Auburn’s schedule has been brutal. Three of their first five games were on the road against Baylor, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M — three tough environments in college football. Despite the growing pains that come with a new quarterback and offensive system, the Tigers have held their own through that gauntlet.
Now they finally return home, rested and regrouped after a much-needed bye week. Head coach Hugh Freeze is one of the best play designers in the sport, and with two weeks to prepare, he’ll have a game plan dialed up specifically for Georgia’s tendencies.
Quarterback Jackson Arnold struggled with communication and pre-snap reads on the road, but being back at home in Jordan-Hare changes everything. Freeze can essentially serve as his “on-field director,” controlling tempo and calls at the line. That’s a huge advantage against a Georgia defense that’s been vulnerable in the secondary and far less intimidating up front than in years past.
The old Georgia defenses were terrifying — deep, fast, and relentless in the pass rush. This version? Not so much. The Bulldogs rank 108th nationally in sacks per game with only seven total sacks this season. That’s a far cry from the days when they were overwhelming offensive lines with waves of five-stars.
Auburn’s biggest weakness has been handling elite pass rushes like Texas A&M and Oklahoma, both of whom rank top-15 nationally in sack rate. Georgia doesn’t bring that same heat. That gives Arnold time to operate and allows Freeze to open up the playbook — including designed QB runs, misdirection, and tempo changes that have historically given Kirby Smart’s defenses problems.
Don’t be surprised if Auburn’s mobile quarterback becomes a real headache for Georgia. Freeze has built entire game plans around dual-threat QBs before, and with two weeks to prep, he’ll be ready to exploit that edge.
Where Auburn can truly hang in this game is at the line of scrimmage. The Tigers’ defensive front has been elite — ranking top three nationally in EPA per Rush and Rush Success Rate allowed. Simply put, they don’t give up easy yards.
That spells trouble for Georgia, which has relied heavily on its run game to stabilize its offense. Quarterback Gunnar Stockton has been solid, but not elite, and his completion percentage drops nearly 35 percentage points under pressure. Auburn has the defensive personnel to make him uncomfortable — led by Keldric Faulk and a front seven that wins with speed and leverage.
If Georgia can’t run the ball consistently, it forces Stockton to win this game on the road with his arm — something he hasn’t proven he can do against a disciplined defense.
The Tigers have every intangible edge in this spot:
- Coming off a bye week while Georgia grinds through another SEC gauntlet.
- First big home game of the season in a raucous Jordan-Hare environment.
- Elite coach advantage with Freeze at home as an underdog — a situation where he’s historically thrived.
Georgia’s a solid team, but not the unbeatable monster the market still prices them as. Auburn has playmakers at the skill positions and a strong line on both sides which will give them the opportunity to pull off the upset.
