After a few low-scoring rock fights, I think Liberty finally breaks through in a comfortable double-digit win at Williams Stadium.

New Mexico State vs. Liberty Prediction
Let’s start with New Mexico State’s rushing attack — or lack thereof. The Aggies haven’t rushed for 100 yards in any game this season, despite facing weak competition across the board. Their last two outings were ugly: outgained 352–27 by Louisiana Tech and 132–15 by rival New Mexico, both blowout losses by a combined 87–34.
This is a team that simply cannot move the ball on the ground. Losing starting center Kai Wheeler in Week 3 didn’t help, but the truth is this offensive line has been poor from the start. Winning without a functional run game — especially against a disciplined Liberty front — is a recipe for disaster.
And while the Aggies’ defense has been opportunistic, forcing turnovers and keeping scores low against bad teams, that won’t hold up here. Liberty’s offense has its issues, but it still has far more firepower and a dual-threat quarterback in Ethan Vasko, who brings energy and tempo that this NMSU team hasn’t faced yet.
Here’s where the game gets decided. New Mexico State wants to run the football, but it simply can’t. The Aggies are averaging fewer than 3.0 yards per carry and now face a Liberty defense that, while vulnerable to elite rushing attacks, thrives against pass-heavy opponents.
NMSU is forced to throw the ball on 60% of its offensive plays — the ninth-highest rate in the FBS — and that’s bad news against Liberty’s secondary. The Flames rank 28th nationally in Passing Success Rate allowed, meaning this is the one matchup where Liberty’s defense actually holds the upper hand.
If the Aggies try to get the ground game going again, they’ll run into a brick wall. If they lean on the pass, they’ll feed right into Liberty’s strength. Either way, it’s advantage Flames.
The Flames’ offense isn’t lighting up the scoreboard this season, but they’ve been effective enough when they avoid turnovers. With Ethan Vasko back under center, Liberty looked steadier last week in a 19–8 win over UTEP, staying turnover-free and controlling time of possession.
Running back Caden Williams and sophomore Vaughn Blue have split the carries since Evan Dickens went down, and while neither is a superstar, this backfield rotation has shown flashes. Against a New Mexico State defense that’s more opportunistic than physical, Liberty should be able to establish the run and sustain long drives.
Even if this turns into another low-possession game, Liberty’s efficiency and home-field advantage make the 10-point spread very manageable.
On paper, New Mexico State’s extra rest might look like an advantage — but history says otherwise. Head coach Tony Sanchez is 0-3 outright and 1-8 ATS in his career coming off a bye week. His teams consistently struggle to regain rhythm after long layoffs, and this two-week gap sets up perfectly for another flat start.
Meanwhile, Liberty has already faced one of the tougher early slates in CUSA and should be more game-ready at home.

New Mexico State’s rushing offense has been historically ineffective, its offensive line is overmatched, and the rest-vs-rust angle points squarely toward Liberty. The Flames’ defense matches up perfectly here, forcing NMSU into uncomfortable passing downs while Vasko and the offense methodically build a lead.
Liberty’s not a flashy team, but they’re the better one by a wide margin — and at home, this number should be closer to two touchdowns.
