We’ve officially reached the point of the season where the market starts overreacting to records — and this line is a perfect example. Houston is 7–1 and sitting near the top of the Big 12 standings, while West Virginia is still looking for its first conference win… but the gap between these teams is nowhere close to what this number implies.
This is the definition of a buy-low, sell-high spot — and we’re taking the two touchdowns with West Virginia.

West Virginia vs. Houston Prediction
There’s no debating Willie Fritz is a phenomenal coach — he wins everywhere he goes — but the Cougars have benefited from schedule luck and opponent injuries all season.
Their 7–1 record looks strong, but take a closer look:
- Nearly lost to Oregon State, who ranks bottom 10 in FBS
- Beat Arizona State while ASU was missing half of its starting offense
- Faced Colorado in the one week Deion Sanders started a backup QB
- Needed multiple breaks late to survive TCU and Utah
Houston is good, but their record is inflated — and the market has fully bought in. This is the peak of public perception.
While Houston has skated through the soft part of the Big 12, West Virginia has done the opposite:
- All six FBS opponents are projected bowl teams
- Strength of schedule: Top 20 nationally
- Played 4 different QBs due to injury and turnover
- Brand new staff + brand new scheme — and now they’re finally healthy
This team has quietly been improving and is much better than the 0–4 Big 12 record suggests. WVU may have found something at quarterback.
Last week vs TCU:
- 28-of-41 (68%)
- 301 yards, 2 TD, 0 turnovers
- Led WVU to within 1 total yard of outgaining TCU
That wasn’t a fluke — Rich Rodriguez made adjustments to the offensive line and tempo, and the offense immediately came alive. If Fox even plays close to that level again, WVU can score enough to cover this number.
Houston wants to run the ball — it’s a Fritz staple — but they aren’t efficient this year. West Virginia’s strength? Stopping the run.
If WVU forces Houston into passing downs, it allows defensive coordinator Zac Alley to crank up pressure — and when teams blitz Conner Weigman, the Houston QB struggles. This is a bad matchup for a Houston offense that is explosive, but inconsistent.
Flat Spot for Houston
This is a classic letdown + sleepy kickoff combo:
- Coming off an emotional road win at Arizona State
- Playing at 11 AM local time
- Laying two full touchdowns vs. a winless Big 12 team
Historically, this is where big favorites sleepwalk into trouble. The number is inflated because the market sees 7–1 vs 0–4, not the actual matchup.

This one may get ugly at times — but that’s the point. If WVU can do what they did last week (move the ball, shorten 3rd downs, stop the run), this game stays inside the number — and a backdoor cover is wide open if needed.
