Idaho and Cal Poly kick off at 10:00 PM ET at Mustang Memorial Field, with the game nationally televised on ESPN. The Vandals are 3.5-point road favorites at -108, Cal Poly is +3.5 at -115 and the total sits at 55.5. This is also the Big Sky opener for both teams, giving a Week 0 matchup immediate conference implications.
Both teams finished 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Big Sky last season, but they reached that record in different ways. Idaho entered 2025 with significant expectations before losing its final three games, including a 37-16 home loss to Idaho State in the finale. Cal Poly endured a six-game losing streak late in the year before finally ending the season on a positive note with a 43-34 victory over Eastern Washington.

Idaho vs. Cal Poly Prediction
The biggest reason to favor Idaho is continuity at the most important positions. Joshua Wood returns as the starting quarterback after throwing for nearly 1,900 yards with 14 touchdowns against only five interceptions while adding 589 rushing yards and seven scores in 2025. Four of Idaho's five starting offensive linemen are also back in Charlie Vliem, Layton Vining, Leon Evans and Kiegan Henson, giving the Vandals an experienced foundation for new offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker.
Idaho also added significant help to a running game that should become a bigger part of the offense. Damonte Bias rushed for 835 yards at El Camino College last season, Ferrari Miller produced 1,123 yards and eight touchdowns at Diablo Valley College, and fifth-year back Hayden Kincheloe returns. Tony Harste, Marquawn McCraney and Nolan McWilliams are among the experienced receivers back around Wood, giving the Vandals more offensive stability than their 2025 record suggests.
Cal Poly has legitimate reasons for optimism, beginning with its defense. Linebacker Mikey D'Amato led the Big Sky with 137 tackles last season while adding six sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss, and Kenny Olson finished right behind him with 117 tackles. Both earned First Team All-Big Sky honors and enter 2026 as preseason all-conference selections, giving Skipper one of the strongest linebacker duos in the FCS.
The uncertainty comes on offense. Cal Poly entered game week without publicly settling its quarterback competition between returning veterans Bo Kelly and Anthony Grigsby Jr. and Hawaii transfer Demaricus Davis. Kelly played eight games last season and threw for 706 yards, seven touchdowns and only two interceptions, while Grigsby threw for 774 yards and six scores. New offensive coordinator Anthony Soto arrives after directing a Mercer offense that averaged more than 34 points and 442 yards per game, but installing a new system while also sorting out the quarterback position creates obvious Week 1 volatility.
Cal Poly also underwent a substantial roster overhaul with 39 newcomers arriving for Skipper's first season. The fresh start could eventually pay off, particularly with the Mustangs opening their new John Madden Football Center and retiring Madden's No. 74 during Friday night's nationally televised opener, but emotion and home-field energy do not erase the continuity gap. Idaho already knows who is taking the snaps and has four returning offensive-line starters protecting him.
The matchup history strengthens the case. Idaho is 5-0 against Cal Poly since the Vandals returned to the FCS level, including a 34-29 victory in the most recent meeting in 2024. The Vandals have also won the last three meetings by five, 28 and 12 points, respectively.

Cal Poly's linebacker duo should prevent this from becoming an easy road opener, but Idaho is better positioned to play clean football immediately. Wood's experience, the veteran offensive line and a deeper backfield should allow the Vandals to control possession while Cal Poly works through a new coaching staff, new offensive system and unsettled quarterback situation. With only 3.5 points to cover, Idaho has enough advantages to create separation in the second half.
