NC State vs. Virginia Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest College Football Odds for Saturday, August 29th

NC State and Virginia waste no time entering ACC play, meeting in Charlottesville for one of the strongest games on the Week 0 schedule. Virginia is coming off a historic 11-win season, but NC State returns the most proven quarterback in the matchup and has controlled this head-to-head series recently.

NC State vs. Virginia Prediction: Can CJ Bailey, Wolfpack Pull Upset in ACC Season Opener?

NC State and Virginia kick off at 3:30 PM ET on ESPN from a sold-out Scott Stadium. Virginia is favored by 4 points with the total at 51.5 after the matchup was relocated from its originally planned neutral-site game in Brazil.

NC State quietly finished last season extremely well. Dave Doeren's team went 8-5 and closed with three straight victories, beating Florida State and North Carolina before crushing Memphis 31-7 in the Gasparilla Bowl. CJ Bailey threw for 3,105 yards in 2025 and accounted for three touchdowns in the bowl victory, giving the Wolfpack a proven quarterback around whom to rebuild the rest of the offense.

NC State vs. Virginia Prediction

Virginia's 2025 season was even better. Tony Elliott guided the Cavaliers to a program-record 11 victories, the top of the ACC regular-season standings and a Gator Bowl win. The challenge is maintaining that level after losing quarterback Chandler Morris, 1,000-yard running back J'Mari Taylor and several important receivers and defenders.

Virginia responded aggressively through the portal. Former Penn State and Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula takes over after completing 67.4% of his passes for 1,941 yards while rushing for six touchdowns with Missouri last season. He operates behind what may be the most experienced offensive line in the ACC, with the projected starting five combining for 165 career starts.

That experience explains why Virginia deserves to be favored at home, but NC State has the more settled quarterback situation. Bailey is entering his third season in the offense and has already started and won this exact matchup. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown while rushing for two more scores when NC State beat Virginia 35-31 last September.

The recent head-to-head history extends much further. NC State has won four consecutive meetings, beating Virginia 35-31 last season, 24-21 in Charlottesville in 2023, 38-21 there in 2020 and 35-21 in 2018. Virginia has not beaten the Wolfpack at Scott Stadium since 2006.

NC State vs. Virginia Poly Pick

Virginia may ultimately prove last year's breakthrough was sustainable, but laying four points against a familiar opponent with the better returning quarterback is uncomfortable. The Cavaliers are integrating a new QB, new running back and new skill-position pieces, while Bailey gives NC State an immediate offensive floor. Another one-possession game fits this rivalry far better than Virginia pulling away.
