North Carolina and TCU open the 2026 college football season Saturday in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. TCU enters as a 7.5-point favorite with the total at 46.5, but a wet Irish forecast, two new starting quarterbacks and significant offensive changes on both sides have helped drive the scoring number down from its 49.5 opener.

The Tar Heels and Horned Frogs kick off at 12:00 PM ET on ESPN, one year after TCU ruined Bill Belichick's college coaching debut with a 48-14 demolition in Chapel Hill. That game featured 542 yards from TCU and only 222 from North Carolina, but Saturday's rematch brings substantially different quarterbacks, coordinators and conditions.
Last season ultimately confirmed the gap between these programs. TCU finished 9-4, closed the year ranked No. 25 and beat USC 30-27 in the Alamo Bowl, while North Carolina stumbled to 4-8 in Belichick's first season and ended on a three-game losing streak. The Tar Heels scored 19 points or fewer in seven of their eight losses, while the defense was generally much more competitive than an offense that ranked near the bottom of the country by advanced metrics.

North Carolina's response was to overhaul the offense again. Bobby Petrino takes over as offensive coordinator, while veteran Billy Edwards Jr. won the quarterback job after transferring from Wisconsin. Edwards previously started at Maryland but played only two games last season because of knee injuries, putting plenty of pressure on returning receiver Jordan Shipp and running back Demon June to provide stability around him. UNC also rebuilt portions of an offensive line that struggled badly against TCU last season, when the Tar Heel running backs averaged only 2.9 yards per carry.
The defense is what gives North Carolina a chance to keep the score down. Pass rusher Melkart Abou Jaoude returns after emerging as one of the ACC's better defensive players, while Belichick and Steve Belichick have a unit that finished much stronger than the offense in Year 1. Carolina's most realistic path is forcing TCU to stack together long drives, avoiding explosive plays and turning the afternoon into a possession battle rather than trying to win a shootout.
TCU has its own transition at quarterback after Josh Hoover departed. Harvard transfer Jaden Craig takes over after throwing for 2,869 yards and 25 touchdowns last season and leaving as Harvard's career passing leader. He steps into a good situation with Jeremy Payne returning after rushing for 623 yards and five touchdowns, Jordan Dwyer back after producing 730 receiving yards and seven scores, and an offensive line returning Ben Taylor-Whitfield and Cade Bennett while adding Oklahoma State transfer Noah McKinney.
That gives TCU enough talent to win comfortably, but Craig is still making his first FBS start and new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis is debuting his system. The Horned Frogs also lost leading receiver Eric McAlister after his 1,190-yard season, so expecting this offense to immediately reproduce the 48 points it scored against Carolina last September is aggressive. Defensively, TCU returns a strong front and standout safety Jamel Johnson, giving Sonny Dykes another way to control this game without asking Craig to throw 40 times.
The Ireland weather adds another reason to expect a slower game. Dublin has already dealt with rain Saturday, and showers remain possible around the 5:00 PM local kickoff. Wind should not be particularly severe, but hours of precipitation can still create a slick football and affect footing early. Aviva Stadium's new hybrid surface should drain reasonably well, so this is not a weather-only under, but the conditions certainly do not encourage two new quarterbacks to immediately push the ball aggressively downfield.

The market has reacted accordingly. The total opened around 49.5 and has fallen all the way to 46.5, while TCU has simultaneously moved from roughly -6.5 to more than a touchdown favorite. That combination tells the story: the market increasingly expects TCU to control the matchup, but not necessarily through an offensive explosion.
North Carolina may struggle to contribute much more than two touchdowns. The Tar Heels' defense is good enough to prevent TCU from repeating last year's 48-point eruption, while the offense remains the major concern until Edwards and Petrino prove otherwise. If TCU gets into the mid-to-upper 20s and Belichick's offense remains stuck in the teens, the under still has plenty of room. A 27-13 or 28-14 type of game fits both the personnel and the conditions.
